DIVISIONS There will be three (3) divisions based on grade level.
Grades 3-4 Grades 5-6 Grades 7-8
Students from the participating schools in the conference will be organized into the appropriate division according to their current grade level.
COMPETITION
The competition will be composed of two distinctive parts.
A. Preliminary Competition
Each speller will participate in the entire preliminary competition consisting of 10 rounds. Each speller concluding participation at the end of the Preliminary Competition will receive a certificate.
B. Individual Finals Competition
A group of students for each division will be organized by the Academic Committee to participate in the finals to determine the overall individual champion for each division. Each speller in the Individual Finals Competition will receive an award.
GENERAL RULES FOR PRELIMINARY COMPETITION
1. Students who are registered for the competition will be organized into a spelling rotation for the preliminary competition by means of a blind draw before the start of the competition. The spellers will remain in this rotation throughout the preliminary competition.
2. The preliminary competition will have ten (10) rounds with the first round serving as a practice round. No points will be awarded during the practice round.
3. The preliminary competition will use spelling words from the green, white, blue, and red spelling lists. The spelling lists are organized to represent a progression according to grade levels.
Grades 3-4 division
Practice round and nine (9) preliminary rounds – green list
Grades 5-6 division
Practice round and first three (3) preliminary rounds – white list
Next four (4) preliminary rounds – blue list
Last two (2) preliminary rounds – red list
Grades 7-8 division
Practice round and first five (5) preliminary rounds – blue list
Last four (4) preliminary rounds – red list
4. Each student correctly spelling a word during preliminary rounds 2-10 receives one point. An incorrectly spelled word earns no point. No student is eliminated for misspelling a word during preliminary competition.
GENERAL RULES FOR INDIVIDUAL FINALS COMPETITION
1. The Academic Committee will determine a suitable number of participants who will advance to the Individual Finals Competition based on the performance of the students in the Preliminary Competition.
2. Words from the spelling lists will be organized by grade level divisions.
Grades 3-4 green list for the first two (2) rounds and then proceed to the white list for the remainder of the competition.
Grades 5-6 blue list for the first (2) rounds and then proceed to the red list for the remainder of the competition.
Grades 7-8 red list for the first (2) rounds and then proceed to the purple list for the remainder of the competition.
3. A student is eliminated in the Individual Finals Competition when he/she misspells a word.
4. Rules for the Individual Finals Competition will continue as stated in rule # 3 until two (2) spellers remain. A champion is determined when one of the two remaining finalists misspells a word and the other finalist correctly spells that word and the next word on the spelling list. Otherwise, the Individual Finals Competition resumes until this criteria is accomplished.
5. The pronouncer will have a dictionary provided by the Academic Committee that will serve as the final authority for all spelling words.
